Objective:
I am a teacher at Paint Branch High School, trying to foster a stronger community within my school and create spaces where students feel safe, represented, and comfortable expressing themselves.

There isn’t much art and design throughout the school, but each hallway is named after a historical figure. This project aims to design original murals that symbolize the accomplishments and contributions of each historical figure within their respective hallway. Each mural would feature an inspirational quote or passage and information about the historical figure. Positive and impactful messaging through the use of murals and interactive displays could be beneficial to the overall climate of the school.
Location:
Paint Branch High School
14121 Old Columbia Pike, Burtonsville, MD 20866

My public space is in the 3rd-floor hallway of the high school I work at; occupied by staff, visitors, and 2,300 students. The school was built in 2012. It's a relatively new building without much artwork, murals, or a sense of community. The school is well-kept and maintained by MCPS.
Audience:
The main audience will be staff, students, and visitors. The connected students will most likely draft ideas and participate in designing and constructing the murals and interactive elements. The goal is to foster and bring in the disconnected students and create a space where they feel comfortable learning.
Mock-ups:
The mock-ups show how the hallway space would be engaged with colorful murals, inspirational quotes, and information.
Next Steps:
This project has the ability to be expanded throughout the entire school. Each hallway features a different historical figure for students to learn about. To further engage students, they should be the driving force behind the messaging throughout the school. The project allows students to use their voices and help develop the space they occupy every day.
